Although the roots and tennis friendships within
the Maywood Tennis Association (MTA) go back as far as 1980, the modern MTA, as we know it today, was founded in 1999.  Our founding members are Ted Wordlaw, Tommy Black, Jim Steen, Ed Gipson, Carol Howard, Wendell Peppers, Dennis Clerk, Ron Dean, and Anita Rancher.  Dennis, Ron, and Jim are now deceased.

We began with a love of tennis and a desire to continue playing, but without money, members, or home courts on which to play.  However, we did have determination.  In the early days, we met in our homes.  Today, we are celebrating over 10 years of service to our communities. We are a vibrant, valued organization with approximately 100 dues-paying members.  We have become a well-known and respected organization in the United States tennis community

The Chicago District Tennis Association (CDTA) honored the MTA with the Crosscourt News Award which recognized the MTA as the 2007 Organization of the Year.  The USTA Midwest Section honored the MTA with the 2008 Community Tennis Association of the Year Award.  And, in 2009, the CDTA honored Patricia Marshall, our treasurer, with the 2008 Tournament Director of the Year—Mary Seelig Award.

Our focus has been and continues to revolve around the kids.  Thus our motto, “It’s for the Kids”.  We work to focus their young minds on the positive aspects of our beloved game called “tennis” and how to pursue success both on and off the courts.
